A20(M) Maidstone Bypass in 1961
Prepared by A. Beaton
The A20(M) opened to traffic in the early 1960s, one of a series of strategic bypasses built at this time to motorway standard. In those days, a higher proportion of motorway junctions were built as partial cloverleafs rather than grade separated roundabouts that we see so many of today.
The A20(M) has subsequently been incorporated in the M20, and in the early 1990s, was completely rebuilt as part of the upgrading of the M20 for the Channel Tunnel. There are now collector-distributor roads running alongside the motorway, serving a number of the junctions shown.
