Retro Strip Maps

M50 Retro Strip Map

These maps were created by Alistair Beaton, a regular contributor to SABRE. They were originally posted to SABRE as attachments to messages on the old MSN Groups. When SABRE moved to its new home, I offered this site as a home for the maps for as long as Alistair was happy for me to host them.

Motorway strip maps have been around for a long time in many different atlases. They also feature on the motorway database section of CBRD, but those maps reflect the roads as they are today. The maps on this site look back to when the roads were first constructed, so for the M6 Preston Bypass (the first stretch of motorway to open in Britain), you get the road layout the way it was before the sections of M6 immediately north and south were built.

I am very grateful to Alistair for allowing me to host these maps. I think they are worthy of a wider audience, and they fit in with the idea of this site, which is to show how the road network has developed over the years.
