Extract from Barts 1947 edition.

Only some roads are numbered

Extract from Barts 1964 edition.

In this edition all single digit A roads are shown in the line type which was subsequently used for dual carriageways - hence the A1 appears to be a much grander road than it was at that time.

Extract from Barts 1965 edition.

Back to a more conventional use of the dual carriageway line type. The Tyne tunnel is now under construction..

Extract from Barts 1969 edition.

The A1(M) makes its first appearance - having reached the Chester le Street bypass in the south of the extract. North of the city, there are lots of new roads projected.

Extract from Barts 1973 edition.

The A1(M) has arrived at Birtley, with the A194(M) heading for the Tyne Tunnel. The A1055 has been renumbered A194 between the end of the motorway and Jarrow. Many of the roads shown as under construction in 1969 are now open to the north of the city.

Extract from Barts 1976 edition.

The A613 (future A1) south-western bypass has come into being to the south-west of the city. The A1 still runs through the middle of town in spite of all these new roads.

Extract from Collins 1979 edition.

The A613 now appears to be the A69. The A1 no longer runs through the middle - instead the A194(M) has become A1(M). The A1 then runs in a dog leg before heading north through the Tyne Tunnel and around the northern bypass.

Extract from AA 1987 edition.

No obvious changes from 1979

Extract from a 1988 atlas

The north-western bypass is now under construction - eventually this will become the A1.
